ArtSciLab member Dante Jaramillo describes their ATEC M.A. project as follows: "Social media portrayal is a common practice across multiple mediums such as television, films, and theater. In fiction specifically, I argue that artists have an obligation to stay within the borders of actuality to practice great storytelling." "The focus for my master's thesis project is to research the portrayal of social media in films, television, and theater, and to present my findings via a multi-modal creative work. I argue that use of social media can be difficult to protray in fiction as it involves a number of layers such as identity, interpretation, surveillance, AI algorithms, and interactivity. Keywords that will be included are: censorship, concept mapping, reputation management, deep listening, multimodaility, interdisciplinary, artificial intellengence, networked publics/counterpublics, and accesibility. The question I will attempt to answer is will we have to recreate the portrayal of human nature in these modes as we are now more connected to virtual spaces than ever before?"
